Great Clips Team Finishes 26th at Charlotte

Charlotte Post

Brad Sweet’s day at Charlotte Motor Speedway got off to a rocky start with a spin in qualifying and ended with a disappointing 26th-place finish.  For Sweet and his No. 5 Great Clips / DIY Network “Man Caves” team, the 200-lap event started with an uphill climb from a 38th-place start.  Sweet worked his way to 24th before his first pit stop despite battling an incredibly loose race car.  After catching a fortuitous caution during a cycle of green-flag pit stops, Sweet was able to move to 17th at lap 60. The improved track position did little to help the No. 5 Chevrolet’s handling.  Crew chief Mike Bumgarner’s call to leave Sweet on track during a lap-113 caution gave the No. 5 its best track position of the night in fourth for a lap-116 restart.  When the field raced up to speed, he was quickly shuffled back and could never make up lost ground.  Sweet hit pit road under green at lap 146 but a caution 11 laps later trapped him two laps down to the leaders. The wave around enabled Sweet to regain one lap but his car’s handling woes prevented any further improvement on the night. In the end, Sweet crossed the finish line 26th.

“We just never had good speed in the race tonight.  I’m disappointed with how we ran because I felt like we had a strong car in yesterday’s practice.  Spinning out in qualifying certainly didn’t help with our track position.  You get back there in the dirty air and it makes it so hard to pass.”
